Integrate VB 3.8.6 with WP 3.0.5
 

Hi everyone,

I have an existing WP installation with many users subscribed.

I have created a folder in the root of my server called /forum and installed vBulletin 3.8.6 into it and setup the required installation parameters during installation. To point out, I told it to use the same database as the WP database (given it the correct db credentials and using "vb" as a prefix for the VB tables, and it installed perfectly - no errors)

The WP works flawlessly on its own, and the VB works flawlessly on its own -no errors thus far.

I have downloaded and installed the vBulletin WP Bridge v10.0.4 from LampWrights into my /wp-content/plugin/vbridge/... so there are just two files contained within that folder. I changed the vb bridge settings to use the RELATIVE path: /forum and left the "Enable plugins during wordpress instance" option box as "No".

Result...

I can log into WP using my WP credentials and I am authorised by WP and can post comments should I wish, however when i navigate to mysite.com/forum the forum doesnt identify me as being logged in. Also, if I use the VB login boxes with the same WP credentials, it cannot find the user and fails the login, HOWEVER, if I use the VB Registration and signup a new user, this user can login using the VB login boxes to authenticate me, and if i navigate to the root URL (where the WP installation is), WP also has accepted that I am authenticated.

It appears that users must use the VB login in order to be integrated to both. I have no problem with this and can adjust my WP code so that it uses the VB login boxes on the WP page. The problem is that all my users that have previously registered into WP are unable to login (because they didnt use the VB registration method).

Is there anyway to rectify this?

The login you use to the WP ADMIN CP is not VB. Users logging into that control panel are actually using their WP credentials.

Now if you are logging in via WP comments then yes you can use VB credentials but at this time it does not log you into both. Not a bad idea though and will put that on the todo list.

Existing wp users will have to use their VB credentials to comment at this time. No other way around that really.

I think what I needed to understand is that the VB database tables are the ones that are in charge of the users username/password information. So I am now "trying" to use ImExp to import the users from the wp db accross to the vb db fields.

im struggling with the impex because my wp default tables are all prefixed with wp_ and my old forum (bbpress) is prefixed with bb_ which confuses matters slightly since there is no generic prefix for the whole db

Ok, I think it looks like I got a better understanding. I thought I imported the users incorrectly, however it says somewhere that importing the passwords accross doesnt usually work because of how the passwords are stored, so I have tried resetting a password for a user, and they now can log-in via the VB login page and are also authenticated on the WP pages (the comments say "Logged in as xxxx. Log out?") which is great!!!

I then found your widget which for logging in from the wordpress pages, which is the icing on the cake!

Now its time to get theming and see if I can make the vbulletin look as if it is integrated visually into my blog... this'll test my CSS skills.

Oh BTW Jeff, take a look at the logon widget http://www.itechcity.org - it doesnt look like the "screenshot1.jpg" image (the image that was with the widget). Am I missing some of your css? Could you tell me what css to add to the style.css file please?

Can you recommend any twitter/facebook sign-in addons that allow a user to sign-in using oauth etc, but of course im after an addon that would work with VB since that is now the master that is control of authenticating username/password.

I used to use one that would sign in the wordpress user, but now that i have bridged VB, that method has to be scrapped.

Thanks for all your help. I just have one other question.

I have the logon widget on my Wordpress page which works great, and it logs the user in via VB, once logged in the user can successfully use the forum AND make comments on the Wordpress blogs too! My question is, what/how can i make it so that the logged in user has access to the "Site Admin" of wordpress (i.e e.g write a new post). Because if I link to www.mysite.com/wp-admin the user is asked to authenticate to the WP side and will only accept the user/pass thats respective on the WP site. Do you see what I mean?

I know your explaination of the Bridge says that the WP Admin is not implemented because WP keep changing their methods, but is there something I can do in the mean time?

You will need to use a WP user for the admin area of WP. I have no other suggestion at this time.

one think that ive just thought of is... when a user logs out (using the vb-widget on the wp page) it does the loggin out and clearing of the cookies perfectly fine, but it doesnt redirect the user back to where they were, instead it leaves them on the vbulletin page (although there is a link that says something like "go back to where you were") Is there a way to make it redirect to "where you were" instead?

Just a quick question Jeff, and anyone else that may know... I'm using the bridge which is fantastic and im using the login widget which works seamlessly! My question is: Does anyone use the bridge/login widget in conjunction with any WP caching plugins? I have found that these cache plugins are misidentifying users login status. i.e when you login, it caches your login. Then if you logout, the site/login widget still shows you as logged in becasue it still has it cached!!

any ideas anyone?
